Thread: Boomers 2014 World Champs Team

  1. #151

Recap of the first 2 rounds of Group D action (Australia's Group) plus previews of the next games.

    http://pickandroll.com.au/2014-fiba-...nes-ball-game/

After two days of intense 2014 FIBA World Cup action in Spain, Group D remains wide open as all teams enjoy a rest day before embarking on three further games in as many days. Unsurprisingly, Slovenia and Lithuania have set the pace having not dropped a match. Australia is hot on their heels, while Angola would now fancy themselves to see Round 16 action with Mexico and Korea yet to add to the win column.

    Cool

This is how I see the last round of the group stage would end:

Lithuania will lose to Slovenia on purpose since no one would challenge their third spot (match fixing!). Based on form, New Zealand got a good chance beating Finland and the Dominican Republic should beat Turkey.

So we will meet our old foe the Tall Blacks in the Round of 16, before meeting the mighty Americanos in a quarter-final showdown.
OMFG this is for Real!!!! * Shocked *

Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by itslef but the wrod as a wlohe.

Why would they do that when our inevitable loss to Angola will allow Lithuania to top the group with a win.

MATCH FIXING AT ITS ABSOLUTELY BEST!!!

If we do that, the Australian Boomers will be crowned the most cunning basketball team in the Universe.

    Gameday

The Tall Blacks beat Finland 67-65! Second placed Ukraine suddenly got eliminated (together with Finland). The result between Turkey and the Dominican Republic will determine whether the Tall Blacks finish 3rd or 4th in their group.

Good job, Tall Blacks. I guess they are our "2nd team" to support

They got more current NBL players than any other team in the entire Universe, including the Australian "OMG Match Fixing" Boomers. LOLZ

They are obviously huge underdogs against Lithuania but they aren't without a chance.

Lithuania have not been dominant, and NZ have been very streaky. But NZ's best is good enough to be competitive.

An overdue big night from Penney, ala Ingles against Lithuania, and keep up their solid defense and who knows, maybe they can pull off an upset like the Aussies did. They've only allowed 75.2ppg, and if you take out the USA game to level the playing field as the US are by far the highest scoring team in the entire competition, it becomes 69.5ppg- not bad at all. This suggests they should be able to contain Lithuania enough to at least keep within striking distance. Will be interesting.

Obviously, Lithuania will be slightly favourite to win this tie, but the Tall Blacks aren't huge underdogs imo. They have been playing very solid basketball in this tournament so far and were in control nearly from start to finish in their narrow lose to Turkey, the 2nd best team in their pool. The game against the Dominican Republic was their only down game really. If the Tall Blacks played as well as what they did in their last two games they could have finished 2nd in their group. So, I'm predicting this tie to be a 40:60 game, with Lithuania the 60. If Penney had a big night like Ingles, it will be 60 to the Tall Blacks.

In saying that, I reckon we should have finished top of our pool. We played poorly against Slovenia, we couldn't convert our height advantage into points and let the Slovenian guards dominated the game. If we played as well as we did in the game against Lithuania we should have topped our group easily. The game against Angola was obviously a fixed match, nothing more needs to be said. I rate the tie against Turkey to be another 40:60 game, with 60 to us.

Blah blah blah. Whatever, his comment didn't count as he is not good enough to compete in this level.

Oh right. Yes, criticising the coach/program you one day hope to play for is quite retarded.

Not the first time he's done it. He was whinging about Exum's lack of playing time earlier in the tournament.

Any time you have four out of six teams making it through from each group and one or two teams way ahead of the rest of the pack, you are always going to have teams trying to game the system for the best matchup, because qualification for the next round is locked in far too early.

Not only that, with the current stupid bracket set up you can potentially face teams you've already played in your group in both the quarter finals and semi finals (eg if the Boomers beat Turkey they will probably play Lithuania in the quarters, then theoretically Slovenia in the semis; similarly if New Zealand beat Lithuania, they might face Turkey again, then the US again).

It would have made much more sense to put all the 1, 2, 3 and 4 seeds in a pool for each seed ranking at the end of the group phase and redraw the bracket out of those pools (random 1st seed vs random 4th seed from a different group, random 2nd seed vs random 3rd seed from a different group, etc), so nobody would tank to game future matchups and everybody was trying to finish as high as possible.
