Default Ben Simmons: The Australian All-American

Ben Simmons' illustrious high school career is coming to an end.

PnR's Olgun Uluc caught up with Simmons in Chicago this week to talk about the McDonald?s All American game, Montverde Academy, his aspirations for LSU, and lastly, his future with the Australian national team.

If you like Ben Simmons down under, be glad to note that ESPN on FOXTEL will show many of his LSU games this season!
    http://www.theroar.com.au/2015/11/18...ketball-games/

Great article from the current ESPN the Magazine issue about Ben Simmons' grounded Aussie nature from Melbourne, the recruiting to Baton Rouge, and how he's managing the hype as, in Shaq's words, "the man now, not me". The Tigers never witnessed this type of hype if not more so since the Big Aristotle and even Pete Maravich, Chris Jackson (Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf), and Stanley Roberts:

Ben had a rough start but pulled it together last night with a double double for LSU against Kentucky, another famed SEC team o course that has a highly-touted NBA-caliber freshman to in Haiti's Skal Labrassiere.

In interviews I listen to on him, I could barely hear a faint trace of an Australian accent from Ben. He speaks far more American. The Aussie accent's more pronounced in his fellow Melbournite friend Dante Exum, who of course never played NCAA ball. But Ben's been in the USA where he's there far more extensively than Dante had at Simmons' point. So his accent likely changed significantly then.

LSU's seriously a bubble team as far as the NCAA tournament goes. According to Joe Lunardi's Bracketology over at ESPN, he's got LSU as a #11 seed. So they're likely in if they can seriously get a move on from here on out. Could get very heated over his team's selection:

Plus there's that finger injury Ben's stricken on his shooting hand:

No Wooden Award for Ben because the school failed to certify him--and I think like many it's about the academics (more on that later). Doesn't matter, he's turning pro anyway soon:

If there's a time to get LSU into the NCAA Tournament and for Ben Simmons to enhance his basketball stock in this disappointing season, the SEC Tournament is it. Let's face it though: the Tigers would be even worse if weren't for Ben.

He's now in the SEC Coaches' All-SEC First Team and is the fourth LSU Tiger to be the SEC Freshman of the Year. And is also the USA Today Freshman of the Year:

No NCAA or NIT for Ben and LSU we all obviously know. Season was just disappointing. Ben was great but team was not quite up to snuff.

We all know this is happening even before set foot in Baton Rouge, didn't we?
    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/15...nter-nba-draft

Now he signs with LeBron's agency. Is Nike going to snatch him for a shoe deal next? Looks like it:

Oh, I hope Phoenix gets the #1 overall pick in the lottery for the first time to get him to make all this suffering and losing right now worth it.

Just days away from his name being called by Adam Silver. Ben will officially join the growing Antipodean NBA Draft contingent with Bogut, Exum, Adams, Luc, Anstey, Mills, Andersen, Jawai, Marks, Bairstow, and even Kyrie (Drewy, Bradtke, Delly, Ingles, Penney, Baynes, The Hammer, and Schenscher are the undrafted ones):
    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/16...ia-new-zealand

Philly has told him he'll selected #1. Much better there than the one drafting next:

Did you see HOW MUCH Ben Simmons is going get just from his Nike endorsement?
    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/kicks-f...003128874.html

And he's in a brand new Foot Locker commercial, now seemingly a NBA Draft tradition with them, with fellow Nike mates Karl-Anthony Townes, Devin Booker, and D’Angelo Russell where Russell pokes fun of the video leakage as part of Ben asking about how to prepare for NBA life. This just hit!

Don't forget Thom though with all the mystery even more so than Dante Exum. He'll surely join Ben:

Showtime here Stateside plans to show a feature documentary on Philadelphia's Ben Simmons from his life's journey from Melbourne, Victoria to LSU in Baton Rouge to now Philadelphia's #1 lottery pick. This is rather unrelated from the Showtime Australia, though I'm aware at the latter pays a licence fee for the use of the name and trademark. Called One & Done, Showtime premieres this on October 21. Surely it'll make its way to Australia VERY SOON:

We're only days away from Showtime's Ben Simmons documentary. But to whet the Aussie basketball appetite for him as we wait for his now-delayed regular season debut with Philadelphia (I'll get to his injury next post), he' starring in a new Beats By Dre wireless Headphones TV commercial with Michael Phelps (didn't he used to be formerly with Skullcandy?), Nicki Minaj, DJ Khaled, Rebel Wilson, Steve Buscemi, Mesut Ozil, Pharell Williams, Young M.A., and Amber Rose among other people that's a Pinnochio-inspired Got No Strings:

Ben certainly is not alone with his disgust about the "fucked up" NCAA makes money off the backs of college athletes like him, as noted in the Showtime documentary clip and discussed by Rachel Nichols, Tracey McGrady, and Stephen Jackson on ESPN's The Jump and The Turn, The Young Turks Sports, Skip and Shannon Undisputed. Sometimes it takes an outsider to show how what a wreck this amateur sham is:

Ben's not playing this season with his foot not healing as well as it should. Too bad. You probably know this already. Maybe it's for the best like with Joel Embiid. But it shouldn't end like him with 2 seasons deferred. Besides, there's only 26 games left:

Ben Simmons making history as the first Australian to ever make the NBA All-Star Game in Charlotte! You'd expect a #1 pick like Andrew Bogut would accomplish this had he stayed healthy in Milwaukee. Nonetheless, it's good for an Aussie and raises the NBA's Australian profile even more. Surprised this has not been talked about by other posters here. Australia's historic NBA contingent of Gaze, Bradtke, Longley, Heal, Anstey, Jawai, Mills, Exum, Ingles, Baynes, Bolden, Creek, Maker, Schenscher, and Dellavedova, among others, are proud without question!

In celebration of this red letter Aussie basketball moment, this is the Nine Network's 60 Minutes Australia full 24-minute extended profile on Ben by reporter Ted Steinfort online called the $100 Million Dollar Baby. Interestingly, Ben was born when Seven was showing the Atlanta 1996 Opening Ceremony live. Done when Ben was a rookie of which Steinfort watches the game with parents Dave and Julie:

Interesting article on here basically how much Aussie is deemed enough for Ben Simmons to some Australians want. Or in cases like him and the traditional qualities some Australians like and prefer in their sports stars. Sure Ben's Aussie being from Melbourne, Victoria like pals Dante Exum and Jonah Bolden and grown up in the game in a city that's the cradle of Australian basketball for decades and loves Australian rules football. But he's also an American because of his dad Dave having played in the NBL there during the 1990s in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, and Newcastle--holds dual citizenship too! Ben does has a trace of that Aussie accent when he speaks. More like a mix of mostly American and some Aussie. How much Aussie do they exactly and really want him to be? Doesn't seem to happen like young actors Chris and Liam Hemsworth, Katherine Langford, and Margot Robbie...yet. Will take some getting used to as Australia's young diversifies even more. Tall poppy syndrome at work? Seems like it. Ben will eventually don the beloved green and gold for international duty soon like the Olympics. Yet, Australians will have to alter some expectations and traditions because some sacrifices and demands must be made as part of the current and changing realities like existing in a massive American sports landscape:
    https://www.news.com.au/sport/americ...13a8310def237e

One sign of his still-engaging love and support for Australia was him recently tweeting his support for Australia's Matildas and Nike mate Sam Kerr, arguably the best women's soccer player right now, on their eventual ill-fated 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup campaign in France
    https://twitter.com/BenSimmons25/sta...08873207033857

ICYMI, Ben originally was looking forward to donning the Australian Boomers jerseys for the upcoming FIBA World Basketball Championship in China. But a short time later decides to pulling out. Basketball Australia sold out Simmons' replicas at its webstore but still has the jersey T-shirts. Andrej Lemanis defends him (Jonah Bolden also pulls out to help build chemistry with Simmons along with their new teammates):
    https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/...fiba-world-cup
    https://www.news.com.au/sport/basket...eaa864defd2cf3
    https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/...-united-states
    https://www.foxsports.com.au/basketb...cd0b3fde25da4a

He's working on his jumper and expanding his range to behind the 3-point line! Didn't make an attempt during the Raptors series and was unwilling because of his lack of confidence on it. He hasn't made a 3pt FG since November 30, 2015 back at LSU versus College of Charleston!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPS4eHeCL-4

Didn't get the ESPY Breakthrough Athlete Award he was nominated in (lost OUT to Utah's Donovan Mitchell):

Then, there's the matter of Ben Simmons being in a Kellogg's Frosted Flakes commercial teaming with Tony the Tiger on combatting the decimation of sports programs nationwide in American schools on its youth. Similar to what Dick's Sporting Goods is doing here in the US too:

Yes, Ben finally hits his first 3-pointers in the NBA!
