They had a good little story about HSH on Ten News tonight (you'd hope so even though they didn't mention anything about it being on One). Hodge was talking it up at the team hotel and Maher's Fleet team did a photo shoot today down at Glenelg. Farley looked in surprisingly good nick but obviously on court is something else and Ken Cole, Schenscher & Forman were all joking around.

Oh dear lord....there's quite literally about 5 people in the stands!
Was this advertised in Adelaide? Is it school holidays there at the moment? If not, what was the thinking behind these dates?
Surely I can't be the only one wishing for rain for the next week so I have a good excuse for staying in...

Walking into an arena with a crowd that size would be rather demoralising for the teams. This audience would be dwarfed by an ABA crowd.
I don't blame these guys for being a little flat. It's also the first game of a fairly intensive week.

One HD reception terrible here in Cairns today - probably because it's still raining... Was looking forward to watching.

Game seems pretty good to me for a midday game in a week long tournament. These guys wouldn't have played at midday since they were teenagers I'm guessing.

Not sure what everyone else was expecting but if it is anything like other tournaments (only experience I've had is juniors and U/20's etc.) then the early games are generally slow and the games later on (when the $175k is on the line) I would think will be a little more intense. Thus larger crowds.

Who cares anyway? Adelaide normally sells out or is close to anyway. If this was Sydney then maybe raise an eyebrow.....

Decent enough game.

maybe the organisors. If it isn't profitable then the liklihood of it happening again is pretty slim.

Big game from Graeme Dann with 20 points, but the monarchs are favourites for a reason. Hodge voted man of the match.
I like that the players are all having a turn at sideline interviews. I was wondering why Ronaldson looked so rumpled...I was feeling sorry for him that he didn't have a ONE HD shirt, but then realised he did...he just looked like he'd slept in it!

Regardless of the disappointing crowd (if you can even call it a crowd), the quality of play is more of a concern from my point of view. Also unlike Twenty20 cricket you really cant hide someone who's out of shape or over the hill. The gimmick they have seems pointless as well, although someone did shoot 4 free throws before.

Having to hear Bill Woods claim the NBL is a better situation than Europe for some players trying to make the NBA is pretty weak. At least he mentioned they'd make more money.

Actually having to hear Bill Woods call basketball is pretty weak.

Still it's nice to see some local hoops on free TV.

When there are 4 NBL games back to back like this, I'll be concerned.

Just like with the players and the crowd, a bunch of games back to back can be sapping on enthusiasm for commentators, especially in blow outs like what we've seen. It's not a fair reflection on the atmosphere that can carried over just the 2 hour time period under normal circumstances.

Thats why Hammer needs to be in the commentary team. You bjust need someone with an expertise in Asian quisine.
The little I have watched has been just ok. As much as I love the sport this does nothing to incite any passion. Lack of atmosphere, no team or location loyalty and little teamwork take away the best aspects of the game. I think playing this in Adelaide was a bad move. Their fans are generally loyal basketball purists and it may have been easier to sell this overhyped stuff to a Sydney market.

On another note it would help if they had names on the players singlets.

Considering the number of new players, the commentary team were doing a decent job of saying each players name often.

For fans that are there, they have been introducing every player pre game and they seem to have programs too.

All fair stuff but I think the reason the Dome in Adelaide might've been chosen is because of the Eddy Groves/JVG connection. Supposedly towards the end of the previous owners time JVG was pretty much running the 36ers too. The Dome has only just recently been taken off of Eddy's hands.

Crowds couldn't really be expected with basically zero marketing and most games being played this week during working hours. It's clearly a made for TV tournament and while at first I found it a little uncomfortbale with the lack of atmosphere the quality of some of the teams has made up for it. The Fleet look like one of the more professional teams so far.

I was thinking the same about the Rickert clone.
Would help a bit if they were to give a quick background of each guy as they are introduced. eg Home association (Aus) College, Pro team last played for etc.
Also it appears that the quarter scores have some importance. So if they do FFS put each quarter score on the graphic.

Regardless of the disappointing crowd (if you can even call it a crowd), the quality of play is more of a concern from my point of view.

Quoted for truth.

I don't even know where to begin. Just amazingly bad basketball, all blowouts, and the so-called 'star' players getting crushed by ABA teams. Even Billy and the Scarf couldn't sell this tournament, the poor play getting to Carfino midway through the Reef/Pythons game.

- the closest game was a 21-point blowout, although it's not like results are anywhere

- the team with Corey Williams and John Rillie and about six other Americans (Pythons) got SMASHED by a team with John Fitzgerald (Slingers), Todd Blanchfield (Crocs rookie), Stephen Hoare and Jason "I played for the Suns, not the Crocs, the Suns" Cameron. The Pythons looked awful

- Woods and Carfino seemed to be under orders not to mention the NBL under any circumstances- the whole "five Crocs (or ex-Crocs) on the court" thing in the Reef/Pythons game could have been a talking point, especially given Blanchfield's performance

- their news site is LITERALLY a free Wordpress.com blog and doesn't have any scores/results/boxscores/anything

- the 'Gamebreaker' power play basically means the team that's trailing jacks up threes, while the team that's leading gets long rebounds and outlet passes for easy layups.

Brett Maher's team came up with a better use- call the Gamebreaker, then fake the threes and pass it into Luke Schenscher for wide-open layups. But then if I recall correctly they were leading (or at least on a tear) so it didn't matter as long as they were getting easy points.

- no-one knew who half the guys on court even were- I suspect some people didn't know they were teammates until warmups! One team had a player announced during intros and the commentators said he was still at the airport and hadn't made it to the venue.

Considering there's no on screen graphics besides the score this is a huge oversight. I have NFI who half of these guys are.

Maybe they need to promote this a bit more like the NBA Summer Leagues. Don't just say "here's #13 Todd Blanchfield!", say "here's #13 Todd Blanchfield, who was a Crocs rookie last season after playing his junior basketball with the Mackay Meteors."

Actually this deserves its own post, I'll cover that elsewhere.

Maybe Hodge will 1 up himself and push Maher over before stomping on his name on the back of his jersey.

No names on jerseys, problem solved!

I was wondering why Ronaldson looked so rumpled...I was feeling sorry for him that he didn't have a ONE HD shirt, but then realised he did...he just looked like he'd slept in it!

And for a 6'9" man they STILL found a shirt two sizes too big.

Positives:

- Todd Blanchfield.

Re: the crowds, surely they could not have expected much with this sort of scheduling. I don't think you'd ever really get casual fans into this, it's more for hoop junkies who want to see a little local hoops flavour on FTA.

I was actually surprised to see they used a proper stadium to play the games, would've thought an outdoor court (similar to Slamball or streetball) would've suited better.

All up I thought it was actually pretty good. Much better than I thought it would be thinking it might end up like some sort of And1 type rubbish. A couple of teams don't really seem up to scratch and what I saw of the Pythons they just look like a team of individuals. The Fleet/Rush game was a pretty good game. Riley, Goulding & Schenscher all stood out. Commentary & production were both good.

The only real negative was the atmosphere due to the poor crowds but I'm sure that was expected plus it's not hard to just focus on the action if you've seen a few of the Greek league games on Eurosport with smaller crowds than that.

Really looking forward to that Fleet (Maher)/Monarchs (Hodge) game tomorrow. Even said brother of mine is right into it now ;)

You're never going to pull a crowd playing on a weekday during work hours. So that's fair enough.

The highlight was having Bill Woods and Steve Carfino commentating again. You could tell they were frustrated at the level of play. Some of the payouts were pretty humourous and you could tell they would've been much better if they had free reign over what they could say.

I agree, it was really good hearing Woods and Carfino. And even when Cal Bruton was commentating with Bill Woods, was so good to actually hear stuff from the old days mentioned - better to hear people taking about the history of the NBL rather than the last two or three years only like nothing before that existed.

For some reason I don't recall his commentating bothering me one way or the other back in the Channel 10 days. Always used to look forward to watching the weekend shows, especially Sunday basketball, that had good recaps most of the time. But thats my opinion, and I was alot younger back then.

To use a Wildcats analogy on the 'love' for Woods - Rob Dempster and Craig Evans - fairly mediocre players to say the least, but mention their names and its the Wildcats good old days for mine.

I think he's doing quite well, especially given that the games would be difficult to commentate on given that there are a lot of fresh faces and that some contests are not overly competitive.

I haven't been a fan of Carfs for a long time, but he is doing well in a laid-back environment where he doesn't have to go to his exagerated hyped-up voice et al.
